Former University Of Hawaii Football Star Diagnosed With Traumatic Brain Injury

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports that former University of Hawaii starting quarterback Colt Brennan has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. According to the article, Brennan was in serious Hawai'i Island car accident in 2010 and suffered serious personal injuries, requiring that he be hospitalized for 8 days.

Brennan had previously been cleared to play by two former teams – the United Football League's Hartford Colonials and the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders. He is currently on the Arena Football League's Los Angeles KISS team. However, last week he was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list. As noted in the recent article, he is now questioning why he had been given medical clearance.

Whether Colt's football career will end as the result of the injury is unknown.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are the result of the blunt force trauma to the head – such as may occur in a car accident or a sports injury. While the effects of TBIs may be difficult immediately following a car accident, several key symptoms point to the existence of a TBI such as headaches, dizziness and confusion. Sustaining a brain injury ay lead to short-term memory loss, compromised cognitive functioning and other difficulties with day-to-day living. In the worst case, victims of TBIs may require full-time care.

Diagnosing and treating a TBI as soon as an accident occurs is critical to diminish the effect of a brain injury and provide greater opportunity for full recovery.

As Hawaii personal injury attorneys we have significant experience helping individuals who have sustained traumatic brain injuries whether in car accidents, sports accidents, construction accidents or violence. Whatever the cause, we understand the critical importance of obtaining compensation to help treat the consequences of a TBI, including medical treatment, lost wages and emotional suffering.
