Fatal Oahu Boat Accident Kills One

Hawaii news reports that a Marine has died follow a boat accident off the coast of Oahu. The man was on a fishing trip with friends when his boat capsized. He attempted to swim back to shore but did not make it. This tragic accident happened just a month before he was planning to return home following five years in the service.

As of 2014, anyone who operates a power-driven vessel in Hawaii must complete an approved boating safety course. The mandatory boating requirements are similar in nature and intent as driver education for new drivers and seeks to improve water safety. For those under 16, they must pass a class and be supervised by an adult over 21 who has also passed the test. This requirement applies to all power driven vessels propelled by a motor greater than 10 horsepower.

Under certain circumstances operators of Personal Water Craft (PWC)/Thrill Craft are also required to pass a state-approved safety course.

According to statistics, Hawaii ranks 5th for the number of boating fatalities.

This accident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with boating. However, even when all precautions are taken, unforeseen circumstances can lead to hazardous, life-threatening conditions.
