Drunk Driving Accidents Spike At Year's End

The Hawaii Department of Transportation has released some sobering statistics – drunk driving arrests are up this year compared to last, and although drunk driving accidents have decreased, the number of traffic fatalities remains the same. According to the Hawaii Tribune, so far this year, there have been 1,135 DUI arrests compared to 1,088 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.3 percent.

However, the total number of major car accidents has decreased by 6 percent (1,336 major accidents in 2017 v. 1,416 in 2016). There have been 32 official fatalities, the same as this time last year.

Drunk driving and distracted driving remain the most common factors in causing car accidents. Further, while drunk driving fatalities have decreased nationwide, the number of fatalities attributed to distracted driving has gone up. However, those people who have been injured in accidents understand that regardless of the cause, being in an accident can be frightening and leave victims and their families wondering what steps to take. This includes questions concerning medical care, managing time off from works, and working with insurance companies.
