Motorcycle Crash Kills One

Hawaii news reports that one man has died in a motorcycle crash following an accident on Hawaii Island. The 25-year-old Kailua-Kona man was travelling southbound on Highway 11 in Naalehu when he failed to negotiate a turn and struck a Jeep Wrangler headed north bound head-on.

Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. This fatality occurred just weeks after another, and is the 16th traffic fatality for 2017 an increase over last year's statistics of 10 at this time.

Some safefy tips to remember to help avoid motorcycle accidents include:

  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings. This includes avoiding distracted driving.
  • Wear a helmet. Although helmets aren’t mandatory, statistics show that wearing a helmet dramatically improves your chances of survival should you be in an accident and reduces the likelihood of sustaining a severe brain injury.
  • Follow the rules of the road. This includes avoiding driving with excessive speed, or too fast for the conditions.

Drivers of cars and other vehicles also need to be aware of motorcycle riders and share the road.
