Hilo resident dies after pedestrian accident

Hawaii news reports that a woman has died following a Hilo pedestrian accident in September. The 86-year-old Hilo resident was crossing the street in the crosswalk when she was struck by the vehicle.

She was treated at the Hilo Medical Center and flown to Queen's Healthcare. She was released, but subsequently died from the injuries sustained. Another pedestrian, an 86-year-old Honolulu woman, was also struck while crossing the road in the cross walk. She was treated at the Hilo Medical Center and released. The incident remains under investigation.

Unfortunately, Hawaii has one of the highest rates of pedestrian accidents in the nation. Further, a new report concludes Hawaii roads are the riskiest in the nation to pedestrians 65 and over. Many reasons may be at play. Hawaii has comfortable temperatures year-round. Many Hawaiian cities, such as Honolulu have a culture and history that emphasizes walking rather than driving. Further, Hawaii boasts many popular beach spots next to busy roadways, which can be a recipe for disaster. Hawaii also leads the nations in the number of drunk driving/pedestrian accidents.

These factors make it crucial that drivers avoid distracted and reckless driving, and that pedestrians do their part in maintaining vigilance when they cross the road.
