Driver Killed in Honolulu Distracted Driving Accident

Hawaii news reports that a 43-year-old man sustained fatal injuries when he collided with a vehicle near the Honolulu airport. An initial investigation concluded that the incident occurred as a result of distracted driving. The police report concluded that the moped driver wasn’t paying attention when he slammed in a car that had slowed in front of him. The driver of the car, a Kapolei woman, was not injured.

Distracted driving remains one of the main causes of car accidents in Hawaii. Distracted driving includes any action that takes your eyes off the road. While most people think of distracted driving as texting while driving, it includes anything that takes your attention away from driving. This may include grooming, eating, even changing the radio station or chatting with friends.

Further, increasingly complex navigation systems have been attributed to adding to the distracted driving problem.

The most recent statistics available show that in 2016, 3,450 people were killed in distracted driving incidents.

The best advice for drivers is to stay focused on the road ahead. This fatality marks Oahu's 30th traffic death this year, up from 22 a year ago.
