Hawaii woman critically injured in pedestrian accident

Hawaii News reports that a woman was hit while walking her dog in Waikiki. The 50-year-old woman was crossing the road in a marked cross-walk when she was struck by a passenger van. Based on an initial investigation, neither drugs/alcohol nor speed appear to be factors in this unfortunate incident.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

2019 has been a particularly dangerous year, with the number of pedestrian accidents for the year spiking at levels well above recent years. Statistics show the number of fatalities is up 18% from the previous year, with over half of them occurring in Oahu.

Reasons for the increase are unknown, but safety advocates point to increased foot traffic, crowded roadways combined with reckless driving as the main factors contributing to the increase.

This accident remains under investigation.
