Hawaii Moped Accident Kills One

A young man died in a moped accident this past weekend near the intersection of 11th Avenue and Waialae Avenue. According to reports, he was broadsided as he was taking a left-hand turn. Speed may have been a factor.

This accident marks Honolulu’s 23rd traffic fatality, up 5 from last year. Moped/motorcycle accidents are inherently dangerous. Here, the man was wearing a helmet, however, the force of the impact was too much to overcome. Some tips to prevent accidents include avoiding reckless/distracted driving (whether as the driver of a vehicle or a motorcycle). Distracted driving remains a leading cause of traffic fatalities in Hawaii. Drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs also contributes to Hawaii’s high incidence of traffic fatalities. Hawaii is one of the leading states for DUI fatalities. Further, be sure to share the road. Due to Hawaii’s climate bikers, motorcycles, pedestrians and cars often compete for the space on popular roadways, increasing the possibility of a dangerous accident.
