Fatal Boating Accident Under Investigation

A young man has just been found along the shoreline near the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport. The man was aboard a 20-foot boat when it struck a cliff, fatally injuring one of the occupants. Another man, a passenger in the boat, sustained serious personal injuries. The incident remains under investigation and the cause of death has not yet been determined.

While it may be impossible to prevent all boat accidents, taking a few precautions can help improve safety in the waters. Some tips include ensuring to wear proper protective items such as life jackets. Additionally, Hawaii law requires that operators of motorized vessels be certified in boating safety. Other common-sense tips include not operating a boat while intoxicated, avoiding distracted boating and obeying the laws governing Hawaii’s waterways. It is also a good idea to check weather conditions before heading out as the weather can change quickly, leading to dangerous boating conditions.

This incident remains under investigation.
