High Number of Pedestrian Accidents in 2018

Hawaii news reports that two fatal personal injury accidents occurred over the weekend. The first was a bicycle accident involving a 70-year-old rider. The bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Kapahulu Avenue and Kuhio Ave. A man driving a truck hit the bicyclist and left the scene just after 3 p.m.. He was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries, and died later that day.

In a separate incident, a male pedestrian was struck walking on Lauhaula Street in front of the Queen’s Medical Center. Despite receiving immediate medical care, he succumbed to his injuries.

2018 has been a particularly dangerous year on Hawaii’s roadways. According to statistics, 88 traffic related fatalities have occurred since January, with at least 28 of these designated as pedestrian accidents. This is a significant jump from last year, where only four pedestrian fatalities had occurred.
